- Offices, schools and showrooms with daytime-dominant load
What the service includes
- Grid-tied string inverter with anti-islanding protection
- DCR-compliant modules for subsidy eligibility
- Bi-directional net meter application and DISCOM liaison
- AC/DC protection, surge protection and earthing
- Generation monitoring via inverter app
- Full portal application and subsidy claim filing
How an on-grid system works
An on-grid - or grid-tied - system has no battery. Panels feed a grid-tied inverter, the inverter powers your loads first, and anything left over is exported to the distribution grid through a bi-directional net meter. At night and on dull monsoon days you simply draw from the grid, and your bill is settled on the net of import and export for the billing cycle.
That simplicity is exactly why it is the right choice for the overwhelming majority of Ahmedabad rooftops. There is no battery bank to buy, no battery to replace in year six, and no round-trip storage loss - so both the capital cost per kWp and the lifetime cost per unit generated are the lowest of the three system types.
Why on-grid dominates in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar
- Grid reliability is good across Torrent Power's Ahmedabad urban network and most of Gandhinagar, so backup is a nice-to-have rather than a necessity.
- The grid acts as your battery at no capital cost - surplus summer generation offsets weaker monsoon weeks through banked units.
- Subsidy eligibility is straightforward because PM Surya Ghar is designed around grid-connected residential systems with net metering.
- Fewer components mean fewer failure points and lower maintenance over 25 years.
On-grid vs the alternatives, in one view
| On-grid | Off-grid | Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery | None | Essential | Yes, sized to backup need |
| Cost per kWp | Lowest | Highest | Between the two |
| Works in an outage | No | Yes | Yes |
| Export credit via net metering | Yes | No | Yes, where permitted |
| ₹78,000 subsidy | Yes | Generally not applicable | Case dependent |
| Best for | Reliable-supply homes and offices | No grid at all | Frequent outages, critical loads |
The comparison is expanded, with worked costs, in on-grid vs off-grid vs hybrid. If your supply is unreliable, read hybrid solar systems before deciding.
What an on-grid installation costs
All three of our published residential packages are on-grid systems: 3.3 kWp at ₹86,000 net, 3.85 kWp at ₹1,10,800 net and 4.4 kWp at ₹1,36,500 net, each after the ₹78,000 PM Surya Ghar subsidy. Full inclusions are on pricing and the per-kW market context is in the price per kW guide.
Net metering is part of the job, not an extra
An on-grid system without net metering exports free electricity to your DISCOM. The application, agreement, bi-directional meter installation and inspection are included in our scope for every grid-tied project - process detail is under net metering and subsidy assistance and in the Ahmedabad net metering guide.
Sizing an on-grid array well matters more than in any other configuration, because oversizing exports units at export value rather than displacing units at tariff value. Send us your bill and we will size it against your actual consumption.
