Off-Grid Solar Systems Near Ahmedabad
Battery-based solar for locations with no usable grid connection - farms, borewells, remote plots, site offices and telecom-style loads across the Ahmedabad and North Gujarat belt.
Who this is for
- Farms and agricultural plots without a metered connection
- Borewell and irrigation pumping loads
- Remote site offices, cabins and construction sites
- Rural properties where extending the grid is prohibitively expensive
- Owners who explicitly want total independence from the DISCOM
What the service includes
- Load audit - every appliance, wattage and daily run hours
- Battery bank sizing with defined days of autonomy
- MPPT charge controller and off-grid inverter matched to the bank
- Battery enclosure, ventilation and safety arrangement
- DC and AC distribution with protection and earthing
- Handover training on load discipline and battery care
When off-grid is genuinely the right answer
Off-grid is a solution to one specific problem: there is no usable grid at the site, or extending it costs more than generating your own power. That describes farms, borewells, remote plots and site offices in the belt around Ahmedabad - and almost nothing inside the city. If you have a working connection and simply want backup during outages, off-grid is the wrong tool; a hybrid system gives you backup while keeping your grid link and export credit.
We say this plainly because off-grid is the most expensive of the three configurations per unit delivered, and it is occasionally sold to urban buyers who did not need it. The batteries carry a replacement cycle, the array must be oversized to cover cloudy days, and there is no net metering export credit to offset anything.
How off-grid sizing actually works
- Load audit. Every load is listed with its wattage and daily run hours to establish daily watt-hour demand - there is no bill to work back from.
- Autonomy decision. How many consecutive low-sun days must the system carry? Two days of autonomy roughly doubles the battery bank versus one.
- Battery bank sizing. Usable capacity after depth-of-discharge limits, not nameplate capacity, drives the sizing.
- Array sizing. The array must recharge the bank *and* serve daytime load, so it is larger than an equivalent grid-tied array.
- Surge headroom. Pump and compressor starting current sets the inverter rating, often above the running load.
Battery choices, honestly compared
| Type | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Tubular lead-acid | Lowest upfront cost, widely serviceable | Shorter cycle life, needs ventilation and periodic water topping |
| Gel / VRLA | Maintenance-free, sealed | Costlier per usable kWh than tubular, sensitive to heat |
| Lithium (LFP) | Long cycle life, deeper usable discharge, compact | Highest upfront cost, needs a compatible inverter and BMS |
In Gujarat's summer heat, battery placement matters as much as chemistry - a poorly ventilated enclosure on a west wall will shorten the life of any bank. We specify enclosure and ventilation as part of the design, not as an accessory.
Subsidy and net metering: what to expect
PM Surya Ghar is built around grid-connected residential systems with net metering, so an off-grid installation generally falls outside it, and there is no export credit because there is no grid connection to export to. If subsidy eligibility matters to your project economics, that alone usually points to an on-grid or hybrid design - see the eligibility guide for the criteria as published.
Typical off-grid projects we deliver
- Borewell pumping - daytime-only operation, sometimes with no battery at all where the pump can run on direct solar.
- Farmhouse essentials - lighting, fans, TV and a refrigerator on a modest bank with one to two days of autonomy.
- Site offices - lighting, computers and a small AC, with the AC restricted to daytime hours.
- Remote monitoring or communication loads - small, continuous, and highly reliability-sensitive.
If your site has a grid connection, compare the three configurations first in on-grid vs off-grid vs hybrid. If it genuinely has none, tell us your load list and we will design to it - a survey is free and we will say so if off-grid is not what you need.
