On-Grid vs Off-Grid vs Hybrid Solar Systems: Which is Right for Ahmedabad Homes?

On-grid, off-grid and hybrid solar systems work very differently and cost very differently. Here is how to pick the right one for an Ahmedabad home.

Before comparing solar panel brands or getting quotes, it helps to be clear on which type of solar system you actually need. The three broad categories - on-grid, off-grid and hybrid - differ not just in equipment but in cost, subsidy eligibility and what happens during a power cut. Getting this choice right matters more for your final bill than almost any other decision in the buying process.

On-grid solar systems

An on-grid (or grid-tied) system is directly connected to the DISCOM grid through a net meter, with no battery storage. Solar panels feed a grid-tied inverter, which synchronises with grid power. Any surplus generation is exported to the grid and adjusted against your bill through net metering, while any shortfall is drawn from the grid automatically. This is the simplest, most cost-effective and most common configuration for residential rooftop solar in Ahmedabad, and it is the only type currently eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above.

The one limitation of an on-grid system is that it shuts down automatically during a grid power outage, as a safety requirement to prevent 'islanding' - feeding electricity back into lines that utility staff may be working on. So even though your panels may be generating, you won't have power during a Torrent Power or UGVCL outage unless you add battery backup separately.

Off-grid solar systems

An off-grid system is fully independent of the electricity grid. It relies entirely on solar panels charging a battery bank, with an off-grid inverter drawing power from the batteries to run your home. This setup is common in remote locations with no reliable grid connection at all, but it is a poor fit for most Ahmedabad homes, which already have a functioning grid connection. Off-grid systems need a substantially larger and more expensive battery bank to cover multi-day cloudy stretches, are not eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, and need more active monitoring and maintenance of the battery bank over time.

Hybrid solar systems

A hybrid system combines the best of both - it stays connected to the grid like an on-grid system, but also includes a battery bank that can power essential loads during a power cut. A hybrid inverter can draw from solar, battery or grid as needed, and can typically still export surplus solar to the grid under net metering, depending on the specific configuration and DISCOM rules. The trade-off is cost: batteries add a meaningful amount to the upfront price, and batteries have a shorter working life than panels, meaning they will likely need replacement at least once within the system's overall lifetime.

Why cost differs so much between the three

The biggest cost driver between these three system types is the battery, not the solar panels. For reference, a standard on-grid 3.3 kWp system with 6 panels has a gross cost of ₹1,64,000, dropping to a net ₹86,000 after the ₹78,000 subsidy - full pricing for all sizes is on /pricing. Adding a battery bank to make the same system hybrid or off-grid capable adds a substantial cost on top, and unlike panels - which typically carry a warranty for output not less than 90% at year 10 and 80% at year 30 - batteries generally need replacement well before the panels reach the end of their life, adding a recurring cost that on-grid systems simply don't have.

When each type actually makes sense

  • On-grid - the right default for the large majority of Ahmedabad homes with a stable Torrent Power or DISCOM connection and only occasional, short power cuts.
  • Hybrid - worth considering if your area experiences frequent or long outages and you want a few essential appliances (lights, fans, Wi-Fi router, refrigerator) to keep running, and you are comfortable with the added upfront cost and future battery replacement.
  • Off-grid - realistically only relevant for farmhouses, remote plots or locations genuinely outside the grid network, which is uncommon within Ahmedabad city limits.

Why on-grid is the practical default for Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad's grid supply through Torrent Power and neighbouring DISCOMs is generally reliable, which means the core value proposition of solar here is bill reduction through net metering rather than backup power. Since on-grid systems are simpler, cheaper, subsidy-eligible and lower-maintenance, they deliver the fastest payback for most households. If you later decide you want backup for a few critical appliances, it's often possible to add a battery to an existing on-grid system rather than starting with a full hybrid setup from day one - this is worth discussing during your installation process planning.

Making the decision

For most homeowners comparing options, the practical approach is to start with an on-grid system sized to your actual consumption - get a free assessment through /instant-quote - and treat battery backup as a separate, optional decision based on how often your specific area actually loses power, rather than bundling it in by default.
