How net metering actually works

Application process and documents
Net metering is applied for as part of the overall PM Surya Ghar and DISCOM approval process, usually handled by your installer on your behalf. Broadly, the steps are:
- Application filed on the national portal along with DISCOM feasibility request, using your latest electricity bill, PAN card and a cancelled cheque.
- DISCOM technical review of your sanctioned load versus proposed solar capacity.
- Feasibility approval, followed by installation of the solar system.
- Site inspection by the DISCOM to verify the installation matches the application.
- Net meter installation, replacing the existing meter.
- Commissioning confirmation on the portal, which also triggers subsidy processing.

From application to a working net meter typically takes four to seven weeks, though this varies with DISCOM workload and how quickly documents are submitted correctly. Common issues and how to avoid them
Meter installation delays
The DISCOM inspection-and-meter-swap step is usually the slowest part of the whole journey because it depends on field staff availability rather than your installer. Keeping your site accessible and responding quickly to inspection scheduling calls helps avoid unnecessary delay.
Feasibility rejection or hold
This usually happens when the proposed system size doesn't match the sanctioned load on record, or when transformer-level capacity in that locality is constrained. Your installer should flag this at the survey stage rather than after application.
Name or address mismatch
If the name on your electricity bill differs from your PAN card or the applicant's name (common in older connections or after property transfer), the application can get stuck. It is worth checking your latest bill's registered name before applying.
Single-phase vs three-phase connections
Most residential systems up to around 5 kWp work fine on a single-phase connection, but larger systems or specific inverter types may require a three-phase supply. This is confirmed during the site survey and factored into inverter selection.
