Solar Panel Price Per kW in India 2026: What Counts as a Fair Rate?
Per-kW rate is the only fair way to compare solar quotes of different sizes. Here are the real 2026 rates, what drives them, and the point where a low rate becomes a warning sign.
When you collect three quotes for three slightly different system sizes, the totals are meaningless side by side. Divide each by the system size in kWp and you get the per-kW rate - the single number that tells you whether a quotation is competitive, expensive, or too cheap to be safe.
Typical per-kW rates in India in 2026
Residential rooftop solar in 2026 generally lands between ₹45,000 and ₹65,000 per kW before subsidy for a fully installed on-grid system. Small systems sit at the top of that band because fixed costs - structure design, inverter, labour, paperwork - are spread over fewer kW. Larger systems dilute those costs and drop the per-kW rate.
| System | Pre-subsidy price | Per kW rate | Net after ₹78,000 subsidy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.3 kWp | ₹1,64,000 | ~₹49,700/kW | ₹86,000 |
| 3.85 kWp | ₹1,88,800 | ~₹49,000/kW | ₹1,10,800 |
| 4.4 kWp | ₹2,14,500 | ~₹48,750/kW | ₹1,36,500 |
Notice the per-kW rate falls slightly as size increases - that is the economy of scale you should expect from any honest quote. If a vendor charges the same per-kW rate for 5kW as for 2kW, ask why.
What actually moves the per-kW rate
- Module technology - mono PERC vs mono bifacial vs older polycrystalline. Bifacial modules cost more per watt and typically yield more over the system's life.
- Inverter grade - a tier-1 string inverter with a real service network in Gujarat costs more than an unbranded unit, and it is the component most likely to need warranty support.
- Mounting structure - gauge, galvanisation and height. Elevated structures that preserve roof usability cost more steel.
- Balance of system - cable cross-section, DC isolators, surge protection, earthing and lightning arrestor. This is where the cheapest quotes usually cut.
- Scope - whether DISCOM liaisoning, net metering application and commissioning support are inside the price or billed later.
When a low per-kW rate is a red flag
Below roughly ₹40,000 per kW, something has been removed. In practice it is one of: non-DCR or unbranded modules that disqualify you from subsidy, an inverter with no local service, undersized cabling, a flimsy structure, or the paperwork left for you to chase. Any of those costs more later than the ₹15,000 you saved. Our avoid-scams checklist covers how to test a suspiciously cheap quote.
How to compare quotes on a per-kW basis
- Divide the pre-subsidy total by the system size in kWp for each quote.
- Confirm each quote includes structure, cabling, earthing, net metering and commissioning - normalise the scope before comparing.
- Check module make, model and DCR status, and inverter make and warranty years.
- Only then subtract the subsidy to see your true net payable.
