Solar Rooftop Subsidy Eligibility Criteria in India: Full Checklist
Most subsidy rejections come down to five or six avoidable conditions. Run through this checklist before you pay any deposit.
PM Surya Ghar is generous but conditional. Before you sign anything, confirm you clear every one of the conditions below - because a system that fails even one of them still works fine, it just does not get the ₹78,000.
The eligibility checklist
- Indian residential consumer - the scheme covers domestic (residential) electricity connections. Commercial and industrial rooftops follow a different route; see our commercial solar guide.
- You own the roof, or have consent to use it - ownership proof, or society/landlord permission in shared buildings.
- A valid DISCOM connection in the applicant's name - for Ahmedabad that is usually Torrent Power; surrounding areas fall under UGVCL, MGVCL or PGVCL.
- No existing subsidised rooftop system on the same connection - the benefit is once per connection.
- Grid-connected (on-grid) system with net metering - standalone off-grid systems do not qualify. See on-grid vs off-grid vs hybrid.
- DCR (domestic content) modules and compliant inverter, installed by a vendor registered on the national portal for your DISCOM area.
- Portal application and DISCOM feasibility approval before installation, not after.
- Bank account in the applicant's name for the direct subsidy credit.
How much you are eligible for
| Capacity | Central subsidy |
|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 |
| 3 kW and above | ₹78,000 (capped) |
Capacity is also bounded by your sanctioned load. If you want a system larger than your sanctioned load allows, apply for a load enhancement with the DISCOM first - otherwise feasibility will come back trimmed.
Who is not eligible
- Commercial, industrial and institutional connections under the residential scheme.
- Connections that already received rooftop subsidy previously.
- Off-grid or purely battery-backed systems with no net metering.
- Installations by unregistered vendors, or using non-DCR modules.
- Tenants without documented roof-use consent from the owner or society.
Housing societies and shared roofs
Individual flats can participate where the society allots roof area and issues a no-objection letter; group housing societies also have provisions for common-area systems. In practice the society resolution is the long pole - start that conversation before applying.
Once you have cleared this list, the next step is the portal itself: follow our step-by-step online application guide and gather the required documents. If you would rather have someone verify your eligibility for you, send us your bill - we will confirm your tier and any load issues free of charge.
