Solar Panel Myths vs Facts: What Ahmedabad Homeowners Should Know
Cutting through common confusion around rooftop solar in Ahmedabad - what's actually true about monsoon performance, roof safety, power cuts and the subsidy.
Almost every homeowner we talk to in Ahmedabad has heard at least one piece of solar “advice” from a neighbour, WhatsApp forward or old news article - and a fair amount of it is outdated or simply wrong. This guide goes through the most common myths we hear and sets out the facts plainly. For a broader debunking list, also see our dedicated solar myths debunked page.
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Solar doesn't work on cloudy or monsoon days | Panels still generate on cloudy days, just at reduced output; annual averages account for this |
| Panels damage the roof and cause leaks | Properly installed structures with correctly sealed mounting points do not compromise roof waterproofing |
| Solar reduces property resale value | A working solar system with transferable warranty is generally seen as an asset, not a liability, by buyers |
| Solar keeps your lights on during a power cut | A standard on-grid system shuts down during a grid outage for safety; only a hybrid system with battery gives backup |
| Solar panels need constant, expensive maintenance | Basic seasonal cleaning is all that's typically needed - see our maintenance guide |
| Panels stop working after a few years | Modules are warrantied for a minimum life of 30 years with a defined degradation curve |
| The subsidy is a scam or nearly impossible to get | PM Surya Ghar is a real central government scheme; approval requires following the documented process correctly |
| You need to rewire your whole house for solar | In most residential cases, solar connects at the meter/DB level without rewiring internal house wiring |
| Ahmedabad's heat boosts solar output further | High panel temperature actually reduces efficiency slightly; strong sunlight hours matter more than raw heat |
| Cheap unbranded panels are just as good as branded ones | Panel quality, cell grade and DCR/MNRE approval affect long-term output and subsidy eligibility |
Myth: Solar doesn't work on cloudy or monsoon days
This is one of the most persistent misunderstandings. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunlight, so they continue producing power on overcast days - at a lower level than a clear sunny day, but rarely zero. Ahmedabad's monsoon (roughly June to September) does bring a run of lower-generation days, but this is already factored into the annual generation assumption we use for system sizing, about 4 units per kWp per day averaged across the year. See our monsoon maintenance guide for more on seasonal generation patterns.
Myth: Panels damage the roof or cause leaks
A correctly engineered rooftop structure - using HDGI pipe mounting appropriately sealed at each roof penetration point - should not compromise your roof's waterproofing. Problems typically arise from poor-quality installation work, not from solar itself. This is one of the reasons it's worth checking an installer's structure specifications and workmanship before signing up; our buying guide to choosing a solar company covers what to verify.
Myth: Solar reduces resale value of your home
In practice, a functioning rooftop solar system with remaining warranty coverage is generally viewed as a value-add by prospective buyers, since it represents lower future electricity costs for whoever owns the house next. It's sensible to keep your installation documents, warranty card, and net-metering paperwork organised so they can be handed over at resale.
Myth: Solar panels keep your home powered during a power cut
This is an important technical distinction. A standard on-grid solar system - which is what most residential net-metered installations in Ahmedabad are - is designed to automatically shut down during a grid power outage. This is a safety requirement (called anti-islanding) so that the system doesn't feed electricity back into lines that utility linemen may be working on. If you specifically want backup power during outages, you need a hybrid system with battery storage, which is a different configuration and cost. Our on-grid vs off-grid vs hybrid guide explains the differences in detail.
Myth: The government subsidy is a scam or nearly impossible to get
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a real, functioning central government scheme, and the ₹78,000 subsidy amount referenced throughout our pricing pages is a genuine benefit for eligible residential systems. Rejections or delays usually come down to incomplete documentation (electricity bill, PAN card, cancelled cheque) or DCR/MNRE module non-compliance, not fraud. Our detailed PM Surya Ghar subsidy guide for Gujarat walks through the eligibility and process step by step.
Myth: You need to change your house wiring for solar
For the vast majority of residential installations, solar connects into your existing electrical setup at the distribution board and meter level through the ACDB/DCDB and net meter, without requiring internal house rewiring. Existing wiring inside the house generally continues to work exactly as before.
Myth: Ahmedabad's intense heat means even more solar output
It's an understandable assumption, but technically panels lose a small amount of efficiency as their surface temperature rises - what actually drives output is the number of strong daylight hours, not raw heat. This is part of why Ahmedabad, with its long clear-sky season, is still a good solar location overall, even though peak summer afternoon heat itself isn't the beneficial factor people assume it is.
Myth: Cheap, unbranded panels perform just as well as recognised brands
Panel quality varies meaningfully in cell grade, build quality and long-term degradation behaviour, and only MNRE-approved, DCR panels are eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy in the first place. Our comparison of Adani, Tata and Waaree panel brands is a useful reference if you're evaluating options - price alone is not a reliable indicator of long-term value.
Getting facts specific to your home
General guides are useful, but the details that matter most - your roof type, shading, sanctioned load and DISCOM (Torrent Power, UGVCL, MGVCL or PGVCL) - are specific to your property. The most reliable way to separate myth from fact for your own situation is a proper site assessment.
