PM Surya Ghar Yojana: Complete ₹78,000 Subsidy Guide for Gujarat
The PM Surya Ghar scheme can subsidise up to ₹78,000 of your rooftop solar cost. Here is exactly how the slabs work, what documents you need, and how long the money takes to arrive.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the central government's rooftop solar subsidy scheme, and it directly reduces what a Gujarat homeowner pays for a residential solar system. Understanding the subsidy slabs, eligibility and application process helps you avoid delays and rejections. For an overview of state-level support alongside this scheme, see our Gujarat solar subsidy page.
Subsidy amount by system size
The subsidy is structured in slabs based on system capacity, and it is paid regardless of which MNRE-approved installer you choose, as long as DCR-listed modules are used.
| System size | Net Payable Amount | Subsidy | Final Cost After Subsidy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.3 kWp (6 panels) | ₹1,64,000 | − ₹78,000 | ₹86,000 |
| 3.85 kWp (7 panels) | ₹1,88,800 | − ₹78,000 | ₹1,10,800 |
| 4.4 kWp (8 panels) | ₹2,14,500 | − ₹78,000 | ₹1,36,500 |
Subsidy amount and eligibility are governed by the Government of India's PM Surya Ghar scheme guidelines and are subject to change. Final amount depends on DISCOM approval. Note that the subsidy caps at ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW capacity and above - a 4.4 kWp system does not receive a higher subsidy than a 3.3 kWp or 3.85 kWp system. This is why sizing your system around your actual electricity consumption matters more than simply going as large as possible. Our guide on 1kW to 5kW system pricing explains typical costs for each size, including net cost after this subsidy.
Worked example: net cost after subsidy
For a 3.85 kWp residential system (7 panels) with a gross cost of approximately ₹1,88,800, the ₹78,000 subsidy brings the net payable cost down to approximately ₹1,10,800. Similarly, a 3.3 kWp system (6 panels) at a gross cost of around ₹1,64,000 comes down to a net cost of approximately ₹86,000 after the same ₹78,000 subsidy. Eligibility criteria
- You must be a residential electricity consumer with a valid connection from your DISCOM (Torrent Power, UGVCL, MGVCL or PGVCL in Gujarat).
- The rooftop must have adequate shadow-free area and structural strength for the chosen system size.
- The installation must use ALMM-listed, DCR-compliant modules installed by a portal-registered vendor.
- You should not have already claimed a rooftop solar subsidy for the same connection previously.
Documents required
Keep these ready before your installer begins the application - delays in submitting documents are one of the most common causes of a slow subsidy process.
| Document | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Latest electricity bill | Verifies DISCOM, consumer number and sanctioned load |
| PAN card | Identity verification linked to subsidy disbursal |
| Cancelled cheque | Bank account into which the subsidy is credited |
Step-by-step application process
- Register as a consumer on the national rooftop solar portal with your electricity consumer number and DISCOM.
- Choose an MNRE-registered installer (such as Solar Panel Ahmedabad) and finalise the system size and quotation.
- The installer submits the technical feasibility application to your DISCOM for approval.
- After DISCOM approval, the system is installed using DCR-compliant modules.
- The installer submits the net-metering application on your behalf once installation is complete.
- DISCOM conducts a physical inspection and installs the net meter.
- You submit the commissioning report on the portal to claim the subsidy.
- The subsidy amount is credited directly to the bank account linked in your application.
How long does the subsidy take to arrive?
Once net metering is completed and the DISCOM inspection is done, the subsidy is typically credited to the customer's bank account within approximately 4 to 8 weeks, though this can vary depending on DISCOM workload and how quickly the commissioning report is submitted on the portal. This is a general estimate, not a guaranteed timeline, since it depends on government processing.
Common reasons subsidy applications get delayed or rejected
- Using non-DCR or non-ALMM-listed modules, which are simply ineligible for the subsidy.
- Mismatch between the name on the electricity bill, PAN card and bank account.
- Incomplete or delayed submission of the commissioning report after installation.
- Structural or shadow-related site issues flagged during DISCOM inspection.
- Using an installer not registered on the national portal for your DISCOM area.
How to avoid these issues
Choose an installer who explicitly confirms DCR/ALMM compliance in writing, verify your documents match exactly across your bill, PAN and bank account, and ask your installer for regular status updates on the portal application. Our guide on choosing the best solar company in Ahmedabad covers exactly what to check before signing a purchase order, including who is responsible for managing this paperwork.
