Solar Panel Installation Process in Ahmedabad: Step-by-Step Guide
A clear, week-by-week walkthrough of how rooftop solar actually gets installed in Ahmedabad - survey, approvals, installation days and subsidy credit.
If you have already worked out your solar panel price in Ahmedabad, the next question is almost always: what actually happens after I say yes? Rooftop solar in Ahmedabad is not a single visit - it is a sequence of a site survey, paperwork with GEDA/GUVNL, an installation of 1-2 days, and a net-metering approval from your DISCOM. Understanding this sequence helps you plan around it and avoid surprises. You can also see a shorter visual version on our how-it-works page.
Step 1: Free site survey (Day 1-2)
Every genuine installation starts with a physical site visit, not a phone-based estimate. During the survey, the team checks your roof's usable area, shading from neighbouring buildings, water tanks or trees, the distance from the roof to your electricity meter (this affects cable length), and the type and rating of your existing meter and sanctioned load. Ahmedabad rooftops vary a lot - RCC terraces, sloped Mangalore-tile roofs, and shared society terraces all need slightly different mounting approaches.
- Shadow analysis across different times of day, since even partial shading materially cuts output.
- Roof structural check - most residential RCC roofs handle standard structures up to 6 ft height without reinforcement.
- Distance measurement from panel location to inverter and meter, since standard packages include 30 m of DC+AC cable, with extra metres billed at ₹250/metre.
- Confirmation of single-phase or three-phase connection, which affects inverter selection.
Step 2: Choosing a system size and booking (Day 2-3)
Based on the survey and your last 2-3 months of electricity bills, the installer recommends a system size - commonly 3.3 kWp, 3.85 kWp or 4.4 kWp for Ahmedabad homes. If you are still comparing sizes, our guide on 1kW/2kW/3kW/5kW system prices breaks down typical costs. Once you finalise a size, booking is confirmed with a ₹20,000 advance, which is non-refundable but is adjusted into your final bill. You will need to submit your latest electricity bill, PAN card, and a cancelled cheque at this stage - these three documents are used for the subsidy portal application.
Step 3: Portal application and DISCOM feasibility (Week 1-3)
The installer applies on your behalf on the national PM Surya Ghar portal and with your local DISCOM - Torrent Power for most of Ahmedabad city, or UGVCL/MGVCL/PGVCL elsewhere in Gujarat. The DISCOM checks your sanctioned load against the proposed system size and confirms technical feasibility for a grid-tied connection. GEDA, the state nodal agency, is also involved in subsidy processing. This stage is largely paperwork and typically takes one to three weeks depending on DISCOM workload.
Step 4: Payment milestone and material dispatch (Week 3-5)
Once feasibility is approved, 80% of the balance amount (after the 20% purchase-order payment and adjusted advance) is collected, and panels, the smart inverter, ACDB/DCDB and mounting structure are dispatched to site. Adani mono bifacial DCR modules (545/550/555 W) are standard across the 3.3/3.85/4.4 kWp packages, with ACDB/DCDB from L&T or Havells and a BIS/IEC-approved UTL inverter.
Step 5: Physical installation (1-2 days)
The actual on-roof work is quick compared to the paperwork around it. A typical residential system is installed in one to two days:
- Mounting structure (60x40 or 40x40 mm HDGI pipe) is fixed to the roof, sized for the panel layout.
- Panels are mounted and wired in strings.
- The inverter, ACDB and DCDB are installed near the meter or in a shaded utility area.
- DC and AC cabling is run and terminated; earthing and lightning protection are checked.
- The system is powered up in 'off-grid test' mode to confirm generation before the meter is switched over.
Step 6: Net meter installation and commissioning (Week 4-7)
After installation, the DISCOM inspects the site and replaces your existing meter with a bi-directional net meter, which records both the units you draw from the grid and the units you export back. Our detailed net metering guide for Torrent Power and UGVCL explains how this billing actually works. This inspection-and-swap step is usually the longest wait in the whole process because it depends on DISCOM inspection scheduling.
Step 7: Subsidy credit (4-8 weeks after commissioning)
Once net metering is active and the DISCOM confirms commissioning on the portal, the PM Surya Ghar subsidy of ₹78,000 - the maximum, which every one of our 3.3, 3.85 and 4.4 kWp packages qualifies for - is credited directly to your registered bank account by the government. This typically takes four to eight weeks after commissioning and is independent of your installer.
| Stage | Timeframe | What you need to do |
|---|---|---|
| Free site survey | Day 1-2 | Share roof access and recent electricity bills |
| Booking | Day 2-3 | Pay ₹20,000 advance, submit bill/PAN/cancelled cheque |
| Portal application & DISCOM feasibility | Week 1-3 | Approve/verify application details if contacted |
| Payment milestone & dispatch | Week 3-5 | Pay 80% balance after feasibility approval |
| Installation | 1-2 days within Week 3-5 | Provide site access on installation day(s) |
| Net meter & commissioning | Week 4-7 | Be available for DISCOM inspection |
| Subsidy credit | 4-8 weeks post-commissioning | Confirm bank details are correct on the portal |
What can slow the process down
The most common delays are on the DISCOM side, not the installer's: high application volumes, incorrect or mismatched name/address on the electricity bill, or a pending sanctioned-load upgrade. Keeping your documents accurate and consistent - the same name and address on your bill, PAN and cheque - avoids most avoidable delays.
Choosing the right installer for a smooth process
A good installer manages the portal filings, DISCOM coordination and inspection scheduling on your behalf so you are not chasing multiple departments yourself. If you are still shortlisting installers, our guide on the best solar company in Ahmedabad lists what to check before you pay any advance.
